Sprains

Sprains to all the extremities are among the most common injuries treated by EOG physicians. The typical causes of sprains are athletics, falls, work-related activities and other trauma. While these injuries are immediately painful and often incapacitating for weeks or months, they are rarely serious health threats. The best approach is to have your sprain evaluated by one of our physicians, who can prescribe the most effective treatment.

Types of sprains and treatments

First-degree sprains

First-degree sprains are the most minor and the most frequent category of this injury. These sprains occur when the ligaments are stretched but not torn, creating minimal swelling and no instability. While they are usually quite painful, they are highly treatable if addressed promptly.

Second-degree sprains

When ligaments are partially torn, the sprain is second degree. Greater swelling, more pain, bruising and some instability are present, creating a longer rehabilitation period.

Third-degree sprains

This category of sprain involves a more serious ligament tear, which significantly increases the symptoms. There is usually rapid swelling and bruising, much pain and a lack of stability. While surgery is rarely needed to treat this injury, rehabilitation time can be extensive.

Treatment

The basic treatment protocol for sprains is icing, rest and immobilization. Patience is required to allow the damaged tissue to heal, especially in more severe sprains. Returning to activity prematurely can re-injure the ligaments. Only in special circumstances is surgery necessary to repair a sprain. Targeted exercises can strengthen muscles that reduce stress on the injured area. This can also help prevent sprains.
